About

Our joints take a considerable amount of pounding during activity. If we don’t protect them at the point of impact they may well show signs of damage and osteoarthritis later in life. Glucosamine has been shown to offer more of the nutrients and building blocks to support and repair the tissue in around joints.

Turmeric, Glucosamine and Omega 3 oil have been found to reduce inflammation and therefore pain – important for joint health.

Turmeric

Turmeric is a root and part of the ginger family. It has a yellow pigment and active ingredient called curcumin, which has a wide range of scientifically researched health benefits. It is widely used in Asian medicine and cooking as a spice and colourant.
What it does Turmeric is widely used for heart health, Alzheimer’s, anti-inflammatory, arthritis, allergies, high cholesterol, liver disease and many more conditions.

There is early research that suggest that curcumin may have positive effects on a number of conditions including asthma, may lower iron in a condition called beta-thalassemia (excessive iron in the blood), may reduce the number of precancerous glands in high cancer risk patients, may lower heart attack risk after a bypass, may reduce diabetes risk in prediabetic individuals, may help reduce an upset tummy, reduce muscle soreness after exercise, and many more conditions.

  • Take one tablet daily with water.

Warnings:

  • Store in a cool dry place out of sight and reach of children.
  • Turmeric usually does not cause significant side effects; however, in high doses some people can experience stomach upset, nausea, dizziness, or diarrhoea.
  • In one report, a person who took very high amounts of turmeric, over 1500 mg twice daily, experienced a dangerous abnormal heart rhythm.

  • Allergic reactions to certain compounds present in turmeric which can cause rashes, outbreaks and even shortness of breath.

Glucosamine

Glucosamine is a substance which occurs naturally, and within the human body. It is found within the fluid around joints and within other connective tissues.
What it does The body uses glucosamine to build and repair cartilage and it may help to maintain healthy joints.

It has an anti-inflammatory action and has been used to relieve pain, stiffness and swelling of the knees, fingers and other joints, as well as arthritic back and neck pain.

Glucosamine may also increase the production of cartilage components and has been used to speed up the healing of sprains and strengthen joints.

A 2005 Cochrane review of 20 randomised controlled trials demonstrated the effectiveness of Glucosamine in the reduction of pain and improvement of joint function in osteoarthritis and also demonstrated its safety.

Omega 3 Oil

Omega-3 is a family of fats that are essential for normal health, including the maintenance of normal blood cholesterol levels.

These fats come in different forms:

  • ALA (alpha-linolenic acid) cannot be made in the body so must be eaten in our diet. It has important functions and is needed to make other omega-3 fats. ALA is found mainly in vegetable oils, rapeseed and linseed (flaxseed), nuts (walnuts, pecans and hazelnuts) and green leafy vegetables.
  • EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) are long-chain fats that can be made from ALA in our bodies. They have the most direct health benefits.

People from the Mediterranean, Japan and Greenland with a diet rich in omega-3 have been shown to have a lower risk of heart disease than Western countries such as the US and UK.  Because of this and other health benefits it is recommended that we eat more foods containing omega-3.

As fish and shellfish are also good sources of many vitamins, and minerals such as iodine, calcium and selenium

  • These provide other important nutrients including vitamins A and D and protein.
  • May protect the heart and blood vessels from disease
  • Supports healthy development of your baby during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • May be protective in maintaining good memory and prevention and treatment of depression.

Deficiency: A lack of Omega-3, and thus deficiency can manifest with the following symptoms:

  • Dry, dull, brittle hair and dandruff.
  • Soft, peeling, or brittle nails.
  • Excessive thirst.
  • Difficulty sleeping.
  • Difficulty paying attention.
  • Excessive mood swings, depression, or unwarranted anxiety
  • There is a low risk of allergy to fish oil. However, it is best avoided if you have an allergy to fish or shell fish.
